Oath of Renunciation

My appointment for oath of renunciation at ICA is 3:15pm and I was worried that I might be late so I went there early. As a result I was there early, way too early. I reached at 2:00pm and my queue number was called at 3:30pm. Word of advice, reach there 5-15 minutes will do, just don't be late.

When my number was called, I submitted these documents
  1. Original MY-RN1 form returned to me from Malaysia High Commission
  2. Photocopy of my birth certificate with a stamp by Malaysia High Commission
  3. Photocopied documents of both above
  4. Blue Singapore NRIC
  5. 4 passport photos
It is preferable to take photos from level 1 of ICA as it is totally non glossy because they will use this photo on your temporary paper NRIC and stamp an ICA watermark on it. If it is glossy they will reject as the ink on the stamp will not stick on the photo.

During the handover of documents, thumb print was taken using thumb print scanner and SGD 70 was paid with NETS.

Now I will have to wait for Malaysia High Commission to return me my K form and submit to ICA in order for me to collect my pink NRIC. I was told that I do not need to make any appointment to submit my K form, just go get a queue number.

Lastly I wait for my turn to swear the oath of renunciation and pledge allegiance to Singapore and sign some documents before I received my temporary paper NRIC while awaiting for my actual pink NRIC.

With the above done, I can apply for Singapore passport on the spot but I applied online as it is SGD10 cheaper.

    2. Hi Kevin, can I know how long after you complete the process within the day before you can apply through the website? I completed the process in the morning but until afternoon I still receive the error "only singapore citizens can apply". Seems like their database is not updated yet.

    3. Hi Kevin, is it right to say that you can get a singapore passport and start traveling even before the approval of Borang K and issue of Pink IC?

Yes, you can travel with Singapore passport without borang K and pink IC.

    5. Do you apply the passport online on that day you completed the registration process (oath taking)? I done the oath taking in the evening, at night I still cannot apply the passport online. The system still prompt the me that passport application is for Singapore citizen only.

    7. Hi Kevin,

For passport online application, do you need to upload any softcopy photo? or do you mind sharing the steps of applying passport online?

At the end of this step in the blog post, you will be waiting for the letter telling you when to do the oath at ICA.

    2. I'm quite finished with the whole procedure, left with the Borang K and finishing of the renounce. Due to the waiting for the Borang K, I forgot if I was handled anything to claim back the birth cert.. :') That's why was asking a little in case I have any that I've misplaced. Thanks for the info and prompt reply!

  7. Hi Kevin,

Based on your blog, we should get back our singapore blue IC when we collect the documents from MHC right?

    1. hi Kher Ning,
MHC don't take your blue Singapore NRIC. It is for ICA to verify you and they will punch a hole to invalidate the blue NRIC when they give you the temporary paper NRIC.

  8. Hi Kevin, when you take the oath at ica, can you do singapore passport on the same day? Or you need to wait for MHC to return you the borang K before u can apply passport? Cos I am concerned that I can't travel for a Long time.

    1. hi Hooi Ching,
You can apply for SG passport immediately. You don't need to wait for borang K. I was passport-less for a week only.

  10. Hi Kevin,

After the Oath Taking, I'm currently waiting for the Form K. I am trying to apply for passport but I saw this field asking if I acquired the citizenship of another country. How did you fill this question? Thank you! Your blog has been really helpful. ^^

    1. Hi Pangpang, if you had renounce your Malaysia citizenship to get Singapore one then you are a Singaporean. Unless you have passport from other countries like Australia. In my case I only have 1 Malaysia passport before renouncing it.

    1. Hi Tew,
To collect SG passport just bring your temporary SG NRIC. Its been a while since I renounce, I can't remember what I submit anymore, best to read through my series of renunciation blog post.

    1. I am not sure. I guess I'm a Singaporean when I got my Singapore passport. I only got my Singapore NRIC after I submitted my certified true copy of borang K.

  13. Hi Kevin, may i know did you ask malaysia high comm to stamp on your photocopy birthcert or they will automatically give you when they return the MY RN1 form? Thanks

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi James, its been a long time since I renounce, but why do you need to certify your Malaysia birth cert in high comm? I submitted the original. If ICA needs the photocopied birth cert, you just need to bring both original and photocopy.

    2. Hi Kevin, I think what James referring was "Photocopy of my birth certificate with a stamp by Malaysia High Commission" which you have stated earlier. So other than MY RN1 form returned, any other documents MHC returned? Thanks.
