Withdrawing EPF

This will be my last post of the Malaysia citizenship renunciation series of posts

This is one of the method to withdraw your EPF as I found out later that KWSP actually offers other means of withdrawal. I'll share how I did mine.
  1. Use borang K to update an existing bank account that were previously opened before renunciation of Malaysia citizenship. This is to change the NRIC from the Malaysia NRIC number to Singapore passport and/or Singapore NRIC number
  2. What to bring
    • Singapore passport
    • Singapore passport photocopy
  3. Updating of bank account information will take 3 days for CIMB, so I had to take another trip to Malaysia just to go to KWSP and not able to do it all in one single day

Once the bank account information is updated
  1. Get a printout from the bank of the latest bank account information with the updated Singapore passport number and/or Singapore NRIC number.
  2. What to bring
    • Singapore passport
    • Singapore passport photocopy
    • Borang K
    • Borang K photocopy
    • Bank account information printout with the newly updated NRIC number
  3. Form to fill up to withdraw EPF is "KWSP 9K (AHL)" and also a form to change Malaysia NRIC to Singapore NRIC number. I forgot to jot down the form number as everything happened in a hurry because it was near their knock off hours. The person attended my case forgot to get me to change my NRIC and phone me after I left KWSP. Luckily I wasn't very far away.
  4. If you have a Malaysia mobile phone number, KWSP will SMS you when your funds are transferred to your bank account. This process will take about 3-4 weeks.

  3. Hi Kevin, I just went to kwsp Jb. The process I went thru is different from yours. Need to go back kwsp 2 times. 1st time is to update to singapore document number. The lady officer used my singapore passport number. Then on the spot the she helped me apply an online account to view my epf account. She said to check online in about 2 weeks if my epf account from malaysia NRIC to singapore passport number. Once it has been updated then I can go back the 2nd time to apply to withdraw the money. Only after that will need to wait till they bank in to my malaysia bank account. The first visit didn't need my bank account printout.
    Which kwsp did you went?

    1. Hi Joey,
You didn't ask them for the manual form to withdraw EPF? Its silly isn't it? You already want to close the account and yet they open an online login account for you.

I did it in my hometown in Klang, Selangor. Well, you know their style, their SOP are never the same. Same for JPJ too.

  4. Hi Kevin. Silly haha. My friend went to Jb branch also same. Went back twice. You were lucky. Different branch different ways.

  5. Hi,
Can we use the join bank account for EPF money to be transferred or must use a personal account?
EPF can be withdrawal from any brand or must go back to the home town that previously open?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Michelle,
EPF can only withdraw to your personal account, cannot be a joint account.

I think EPF can be withdrawn to any Malaysian banks opened in any state. So far they never check my bank account was open from which state.

    1. Hi kc,
Yeah. If you don't have any Malaysia bank accounts prior to renunciation then you need to open one just for the sake of withdrawing your EPF. I heard Maybank able to change particulars immediately without 3 days wait with CIMB.

    2. Kev,
Just update I've submitted my withdrawal . went to kwsp HQ at jln gasing. Parking is limited within the compound and expensive as well. To the readers here, bring a copy of your Singapore passport and boring k including originals. And have a bank statement with your name and Singapore passport on it, I opened an account just for this using my SG passport.
You need a black pen for filling up the withdrawal form, then queue with number.
All staff at HQ are knowledgeable and polite.
I was given a statement printout by the officer and then proceed to handle and submit the paperwork.
All can settle within an hour .
Some interesting thing , the officer told me that I could actually leave the money in EPF accounts, still will get dividends. And the dividend is around 5-6% p.a. some of your readers might wanna consider this option. Cheers.

    3. Hi Kevin/Kc
I renounced since 3 years ago & have not collected by EPF yet as I do not have any bank account in Malaysia, should have open it before I renounce previously. I was wondering how long can we leave our money in EPF to earn the yearly 5-6% dividend?
Else, I really need to find the time to go down to JB to open the new bank account & KWSP to settle the paperwork.. thanks

    1. hi Yean Yean, from the comments I've read so far about KWSP, it seems like there is not standard procedure. It differs from branch to branch, so it is best to check with the branch you plan to withdraw your EPF.

I got my borang K around 8 months from the oath of renounciation and around 2 months from citizenship ceremony.

  12. Hi,
Have you received your Borang K from Malaysia Embassy in SG? If not, you should wait until you get original Borang K just can proceed to Malaysia EPF & bank.
Is it you have entered to EPF before, you may update your nationality after that and wait for around 1 month then go again to withdraw the EPF.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, (1) I hope you had opened your bank account before you renounce your MY citizenship else you are unable to open bank account even with your original borang K. (2) Borang K is just a proof to say that you were formally a Malaysian, you are unable to use it for identification like NRIC or passport to open bank account. (3) EPF operating procedures varies from branch to branch. I do not recall updating my EPF nationality, I only update my CIMB bank account nationality and identification. CIMB bank details at the time I withdrew my EPF was not real time update, they need few days just to update my identification to SG passport.

    2. Hi, Kevin. I had existing bank account in Malaysia so I need updated my nationality first before enter to KWSP. After a week, I was entering KWSP to apply my EPF funds from KWSP, but officer said that I haven't update my nationality from Malaysian IC to SG Passport so I had to do so and waited for another 1 month just can apply withdrawal of my fund. FYI, if your withdrew amount more than RM20K, they are unable to do fund transfer to any Malaysia local bank. I had experienced on this issued before, so they will issued cheque with your full name, post by registered mail in Malaysia home address. The recipent must receive by ownself, the postman will not release the registered mail to your family member. My sister in law receive on behalf for me, postman refused to release on it and told my sister in law that I must receive by personally. Since like that, I wrote an letter of authorisation (enclosed SG passport & SG NRIC) to my sister in law for collect on behalf from post office. The head officer read through on it then released the registered mail (cheque) to her.

  13. Hi, is there anyone can advise if i can open an bank account with SG IC/Passport? I don't have any bank account in MY but i plan to withdraw my EPF...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, (1) you are unable to open bank account in Malaysia with your foreign identification unless you work there. (2) you can only withdraw EPF through bank transfer if your KWSP identification is the same as the one in the bank. SG NRIC or SG passport != MY NRIC.

I think you might have to withdraw your EPF as cheque. I heard of the withdrawal method by cheque but I have no idea what the process is like.

    2. Hi there, EPF doesn't provided overseas telegraphic transfer anymore. Accotrding from the withdrawal form we had submited to EPF counter, they only accept Malaysia bankers or issue cheque self-collection from EPF counter or mail out in Malaysia address only. If you wish to collect the cheque, you can advise them in advance. Your husband can collect the cheque after 1 month surrender. EPF counter had open on Sunday so it is convenient to go JB HQ.

    6. Hi Jaw Seng, what do you mean only have joint account? Is it your bank account in Malaysia is joint account instead of single account? From my experienced, I had banked into joint account was rejected by my issue bank (Public Bank Account). The officer called my singapore mobile to inform me that only can bank in under single account instead of joint account. Either you ask for Cheque, then withdraw from your issue bank instead of drop cheque. Otherwise, you can ask your issue bank on your question.

    7. Hi Kathlen. Thank you for your prompt response. Mine is Maybank joint alternate savings account. So you had experienced problem with joint account. I better check with both EPF & Maybank regarding this issue.
By the way, for your first time that you tried to bank in whereby Public Bank rejected, was it by bank transfer or cheque? In the end, how did you resolve with EPF & Public Bank?

      Delete
    8. Hi Jaw Seng. you're welcome. Hope my info can help you a lot. Firstly, I had banked into PBB bank in Skudai, Johor Bahru, it was cheque deposited to my joint account. I had saving account in PBB bank also, so bank officer called to inform that the cheque can't be deposited into joint account and they will deposited to saving account for me. I never ask EPF against this issue, as they totally will not give you a proper answer on that. EPF officer will ask you to make inquiry on your issue bank on this matter. You may ask Maybank on this issue, as different banker different policies.

    1. Hi, Khor Karlun. Answer: 1) You should finished your SG journey and wait for ICA letter to inform you the date of renounce. For Borang K, you will not so early to get from Malaysia Embassy in Singapore after you renounce, maybe you may receive it will take around 8 months after you submit your Malaysia IC, Passport through Malaysia Embassy. 2) You may refer the date of request from ICA first, If ICA request you to renounce the date before your travelling date, you must done it before that if not you will fail to be Singapore Citizenship. For Singapore Passport only will issue after you renounced in ICA and wait for 1 week to collect the passport. You may ask to change the nationality passport if you have get Singapore Passport. If not, you still remain use Malaysia Passport before renounced your Mlaaysia citizenship.

    2. I had faced the same problem last 2 years, but I was done my renounced after came back from my holiday in December (it was within the period ICA requested). For EPF, when you get Borang K then just can walk in EPF to update your nationality and wait for another 1 month to apply withdraw.

    Sg journey 2 dated(12-10-18)

    My holiday trip dated is
    (04-12-18)~(16-12-18)

means if I gotten my Singapore passport before my trip then is ok and updated my flight ticket.

Do I need to informed early now before finish the Sg journey?

    1. Hi Khor Karlun, if you complete all your SG Journey also, the letter from ICA will be issue to your mailing address within 14 working days. Atfer you receive the letter, then you can go to Embassy Malaysia in Singapore and submit all documents. You need wait for 3-5 calendars day to collect back the documents from Embassy Malaysia then just can go to ICA again for renounce. I suggest you wait for the letter from ICA after all journey then just can know what to do. ICA letter won't be on time send out to us, so I can't comment too much in this post first. You get the date of renounced from ICA letter then can know what you want to do before or after that.

And if I am not wrong, that's different deposit amount, criteria for open a new account. If you do not have bank account in Malaysia. You also can request cheque from EPF, you can withdraw money from bank issued by EPF. The cheque is under RHB Bank. But the procedure must check again from RHB Bank, whats the documentation if you like to withdraw money as foreigner.

I just received my ICA today for the final state, this Friday I hv to go to Malaysiahigh comm for the renounced.

Just to check with again for the EFP withdrawal. During processing the EFP Withdrawal, do they need the malaysia passport or IC?

As I know IC will be taken back from the High Comm, so left the passport only.

    Thanks🙇🙇🙇

  27. Hi Khor,

Yes, you are right. Malaysia High Comm will take back Malaysia Passport & IC.

For EPF withdrawal, you no need provide Malaysia passport & Malaysia IC during processing. EPF need original Borang K, Singapore IC & Singapore Passport. But this part, you need wait for about 6-8 months then get your Borang K from letter of high comm.

You may email to EPF first for checking how to update your nationality before you apply of EPF withdrawal. From my last time experience, I walked in to update my nationality and wait around 1 month for HQ updating my nationality. After that, I walked in again for apply withdraw my EPF. It was taken around 1-3 months for this processed. How you understand.

  40. Just completed my withdrawal with KWSP JB. Need 2 visits as first visit they only allow to update personal particular (passport no, update took a week plus) and cant submit withdrawal application at the same time - although KWSP main hotline said can. 2nd visit (did it on Sun, super crowded, took almost 2 hrs just to get the Q number and another 1 hr to submit over the counter), submitted withdrawal application with direct credit to Msia Bank acct, they accepted and processed (during first visit, their official said can take cheque only as withdrawal..seems like their SOP vary across their staff) , it was approved and credited to my M'sia bank acct 1 week plus later and my KWSP acct was then closed.

    2. From the 9K withdrawal form, there is option in section C for foreign demand draft for certain foreign currency, draft to be collected at their counter or by mail to M'sia/Oversea's address ..http://www.kwsp.gov.my/o/kwsp-theme/css/assets/pdf/SSD_PMB_BP_LEAVINGCTR_V022018_01032018.pdf ..they also allow mail in application from oversea but the drawback is you will need to certify your copy of doc by public notary or M'sia High Comm's staff and may have high chance being rejected due to thumb print (KWSP JB staff told me that) or mail lost .. you may just go down with the required docs to confirm with them, the most 3 visits I believe.

    3. Thanks FK. So to summarise...
1st visit: Update personal details on EPF account. May i ask how long did the process take?

2nd visit: Withdrawal of EPF fund. May i ask what are the documents required and also what form you fill up? Possible to prepare everything beforehand?

3rd visit: Collect cheque in SGD currency.

May i know, each visits take how long?

And one last question, I don't drive...so taking bus there..and not familiar with JB at all...is there bus or taxi that can take us there? Is it very far from checkpooint? Thanks in advace!!!

    4. @Ixote,here is what I can recall:

1st visit: Q up at their reception, their officer will check if u hv all required doc (copy and original of passport and Borang K) then pass u Form 3 for personal info update (if remember correctly, compare to its online version it has has additional portion for ur employment history eg. comp name, addr, period sort of), once fill up done show to them again to get a Q number then proceed to wait for ur doc n form to be verified, certified and submitted over at their counter. I was there on weekday 3pm+ and settled in ard 30 mins. U can search this form from their website to see what to fill up. My update was completed a week later as shown fr my online acc.

2nd Visit: Same doc but diff form - copy and original of ur passport and Borang K, 9K withdrawal form this time (link as previous reply, if want to print out, print it as single page and not double page).Same thing, q and tell the officer at the reception that this is ur 2nd visit , show them the form and doc, get the Q number, wait for ur turn to submit over their counter- done.I was there on Sunday ard noon time and settled ard 3pm.

Typically Sunday sounds more crowded there compare to weekday (they close on fri-sat) and should be able to settled within the day for each submission if ur there before noon with all the required doc.

U may just take a grab/cab at JB sentral/City Square Mall that cost less than RM 10 with a less than 10 min trip.

    5. THanks @FK...so when you submit on 1st and 2nd visit, eg...do they fix a date for you to come down again? because i think i can only go down on Sundays...

Btw, how did u register the online access, cos they need us to have a pin or something? I never did anything yet, since 20 years here in SG

    6. @Ixote,

They didn't fix a date for me..so long ur acct has been updated with ur sg passport number ur good to go for withdrawal application as 2nd visit at ur own convenient time. There was no 3rd visit for me as mine was direct bank in.

To create online acct, u can simply do it at their counter during ur first visit (they will registered ur mobile-my/sg to receive TAC)..I did mine many yrs back.

    2. Hi SORRY for the late reply, actually you can take grab taxi. Not need early go there. There services are fast. Only q for the no might take longer time. Around 15min..for the first time withdraw all epf money. You need photo copy borang K and passport bio data. Bring along the original as well. Then fill the form. Waiting for the no. After that. The staff will verify document and ask you back 21 day later.

For today I come second time. After 21days. I q again and fill the form (the form is the first time counter staff pass you.) then waiting for your turn. Around 10mins waiting. (bring along photocopy passport biodata and the borang K.) original must bring along too. Then the staff will ask you collect bank draft or cheque. For me I collect cheque. Also waiting 21 days.

Although alot peoples at the epf building.. But all are fast.. The epf customer service all are friendly.

You also can choose don't withdraw the epf money.. The interest is high.. 6.15%. Haha.

Thank you all. Learn alot thing from Kevin here.

    3. Thanks for the update @Jef Papajo...Really awesome to know the process before going down.

I was just wondering, if we bank in cheque in SG, will there any interest or fee charges?

...and what's the difference between bank draft and cheque?

Also, are you able to check your balance online after the 1st visit? I totally haven't register online and after 20 years in SG, i never check or do anything also...

    4. Hi, ixote, yes. The staff will ask you either you want sg currency or rm currency, I choose rm currency. Currency exchange rate is low. Not worth.they will ask you collect at the counter customers service. (bring along the pass passport.)

you may call epf hotline give them your Malaysia ic. They will give you your epf account no. (its also user id to log in web page). Must register it. You also can download the app from apple and android.
